Yep, the boom is tapered at the outboard end. It has a number of octagonal inserts in it to provide fastening for various cleats and blocks as well. That was a nice bit of work... fitting those things in just right.

Nice! I love those sticky glue projects...
That boom is nifty too. Is it tapered as well as hollow?

Hey Bob,
We certainly do fill all the screw holes, as well as grind out the shiners (the places where the copper nails came through the surface) to just below the surface level of the deck, and finally any little dings and divots that could print through the canvas. No bungs. Thank god, that would have added a week to the project. We're using epoxy with 410 fairing compound (we use West Systems). It's strong and sands well.

Beautiful bronze work! That's why they pay you the big bucks!

Should we assume that "get ready for canvassing" includes filling the bizillion screw holes? Putty or (oh-no!) bungs? Bungs if it were to be left uncovered, but I assume putty since its being canvassed.

Hmmm, a hex birds mouth mast that's oval and tapered? Quite an interesting bit of shaping to do! Don't forget your camera those days.

As always, THANKS for the pics and the explanations.

Good point. Last time I got pumped up on steroids I got so angry I ate a table saw. The next morning I really regretted leaving the blade on. Ooof.

OK, Tom, how many times do I have to tell you, steroids are not good for you, or for your tools. Stick with the anti-rust lubricant.

Thanks Gina, It's a little hard to think ahead of graduation these days.... there's a TON to do to finish up the six meter we're working on now. I'd hate to not have a boat to splash on launch day!

Fabulous! Congratulations Tom! Of course, it comes as no surprise to those who have been following this blog. Your work is very fine and your explanations clearly reveal your depth of knowledge. Little wonder that people would want to hire you.

Hope you get a good chunk of that billable rate. ... and please don't stop blogging. You and Barrett have the best boatbuilding blogs on the net.

CONGRATS!
