Back in the e-saddle

Hi folks,

After a few weeks of being computer-free (the logic board on my power mac died) I’m back in the digital world.  It’ll take a little time to transfer everything over, so be patient.

Many photos coming of the Tall Ships parade of sail, installing ceilings in Roann, and really anything that tickles my fancy.

Thank goodness! We have really missed this blog. Love, Mom

What Mom says. I didn’t realize how I was hooked until I tuned in last week and you weren’t there.

My name is Ted and I live in Austin, Texas. When I was a teenager (mumble mumble) years ago my Dad and I built a 15-foot knockabout, and since then we enjoyed many, many hours daysailing on Central Texas lakes. The boat is long gone now and since the kids are grown I recently got a hankering to build a similar one. I stumbled on your blog about six months ago while researching sailboat projects on the Net.

I figger I owe you twice: once for the fascinating, brialliantly written account of your own experience, and again for reminding me about the patience, time, space, tools and effort that go into even a small craft well-built. You saved me from a big mistake and possibly a divorce. From now on I’ll be happy to do my boatbuilding vicariously through you and others.

    Thanks, and good luck!

    Hi folks,
    good to be back!

Now Ted, I’m sure you’ve seen the bumper sticker, “My wife said it was the dog or her. We sure miss her.” Ha ha, OW!!

Thanks for the kind words Ted, but keep in mind, there’s a ton of ways to build boats. Phil Bolger’s books on building with plywood come immediately to mind. And I just was sent this website today: http://aboatbuildingjournal.com/photo.htm This fellow has made all manner of boats in his garage, some of them in a really short time. Granted, the carvel planked, traditionally built boats look a little nicer, but really, are your out to sail or sell?

BTW, I love Austin. Went to the ACL festival in Zilker park 3 years running. Great music, great food, a river to swim in… what’s not to love?

    Tom
