Monks, monking around
One of the unexpected side effects of this blog is that I get to hear about other interesting boat projects from folks who stumble onto the site. For instance, Glenn in Alaska has been working on a 1953 Bristol Bay gillnetter with a really cool transom:
Here’s to BB Twelve, and another labor of love.
There’s this whole world of folks working on their boats, or their programs, or something else that they love, sharing what they know freely to anyone who happens to bump into them online. This open sharing is one of the ideals that the net was created to promote, and I feel proud and lucky to be able to add a little something to it.
Makes me think of a story I heard about monks begging in India. The monks only own their robes and begging bowls, and every day they live on whatever people give them. The monks say that they’re doing a service to the community, because when people give something, they know that they’ve made a difference in a person’s life. That’s the gift back.
We’re all monks on this bus.

Sir,
I’ve been enjoying your blog for some time now. The recent post interested me in lieu of me wanting to build a gillnetter as a companion piece to the ship that I crew on, the Star of India.
That said, as a whole, the blob has been enlightening to boatbuilding process and hints.
Cheers,
Brad, with envy

Hey Brad,
you crew on THE Star of India, out of San Diego? I think it’s my turn to be jealous. In case anyone reading this doesn’t know about this ship, you can get tons of info about it here, along with some decent videos about her history: http://www.sdmaritime.com/contentpage.asp?ContentID=48 She’s an amazing boat, one of the very last of her kind. I can’t believe you get to crew on her!!
And call me “sir” again and I’ll have ye cleanin” the bilges with yer toothbrush, ye scurvey lubber.
I’m glad the blob has been fun and helpful. That’s all a fellow can ask for, aside from free beer of course.
Take care,
Tom

Just came across your blog today and had to go back to the beginning to read it all! Unfortunately work is interfering so I’ll finish it tonight. Congrats on taking the plunge and life-change. It’s something I can understand and applaud. Keep up the informative and enjoyable postings!

Hi Greg,
Sounds like you’ve done a life 180 yourself! Glad you’re enjoying this little blog, but hey, if your boss writes in to ask why you’re spending all your time here… you’re on your own bucko.
